BREAKING BAD HABITS in PARROTS

An outdoor aviary

 Companion birds will benefit greatly from having access to a day-fight-an aviary in the garden that they can use during the daytime in good weather．To encourage the bird to exercise by flying，the aviary needs to be big enough to induce flight．For birds such as Senegals or cockatiels an aviary 8 feet long×5 feet deep×6feet high(2．5 m×1．5 m X 2 m) would suffice．For birds the size of an African gray or Amazon parrot the day—flight should be nearly twice this size．The frame can be made of wood and the wire should be strong enough for the intended birds．The gauge of the wire relates to its thickness．The lower the gauge number the thicker and stronger the wire．For most medium—sized parrots the wire gauge should be 14 or 12, and the mesh should be 1 square inch (2．5 cm²)．For smaller birds, you can use 16 gauge with 1×inch(2．5 X 1．25 cm)mesh．

 Use best quality galvanized mesh，not cheaper hot—dipped mesh；its rough zinc coating can be picked off and eaten by the birds and is poisonous．To deter rats the wire should be buried 12 inches(30 cm)deep in the soil，or the structure can be mounted on a concrete base．

PROVIDE PLENTY 0F PLANTS

 A sloping roof allows rainwater to drain off easily．Use polycarbonate sheeting for the solid roof sections. This is often used on conservatory roofs and is much stronger than corrugated plastic sheeting．The back can be 7—8 feet (2．1—2．5 m) high with the front about 6×feet(2 m)high．The back should be made from some solid，opaque material so the bird cannot see through it．

 Alternatively，build the aviary against a wall．If you use wood，you’ll need to cover it with wire mesh to prevent the bird from chewing through it．The design and positioning of the aviary should allow some sun and rain to fall on it，but part of it should be sheltered from this，so your bird can move around to wherever it feels comfortable．

 Despite coming from tropical countries．Parrots dislike spending long periods in direct sunlight，as this causes them to overheat．So ensure the bird always has access to plenty of shade．

 Climbing plants，such as clematis，honeysuckle or passion flower, can be grown outside the aviary and encouraged to spread onto the roof．This gives a dappled shade effect and allows the birds to feel more secure since they can hide from hawks or other large birds that they may see flying above them．The aviary should be fitted with natural branches for perches and some rope perches made of natural fibers，such as hemp or cotton. Many parrot aviaries are still poorly equipped.

 Despite what you may have heard, provided your aviary is large enough you can usually get a range of plants to grow inside it. Again, this natural backdrop helps the birds feel more at home and relaxed. Make sure you have some toys and large food and water bowls as well. When taking your bird out to the aviary, always assume (even if it is wing-clipped) that it could fly off. Use a traveling cage and take it into the aviary where you can then release the bird.
